Placement as far to one side of the phone would do that.

The headphone jack crossed the road from the bottom to the top of the phone.
One Plus is turning out to be the perfect phone, only if the stick to their half ceramic and half metal unibody.
Eske Rahn, 22 May 2017Well I have no idea on how much space is needed to make a fingerprint reader. But given the wi... moreIf you mean the headphone jack on the left or right part of the phone, I think it's actually possible.
Samsung was able to put the speaker on the side, and we do know that speaker is larger than a jack, so you may be right, and the jack can actually just be put beneath the screen so we can still make small bezel phones with the jack on the sides.
AnonD-612548, 22 May 2017Only if the audio jack is on the side. That's the new trend we should want. No, this is completely senseless. Top or bottom

But given the width of a finger I would be surprised if it not way wider than what is needed for a 3.5mm jack, so I guess it should be possible to put it on the opposite side?

This tweet came around 2 days ago and I had mentioned that in a OnePlus article. If you guys go check his twitter now, you'll find that Carl Pei has actually responded to this very GSMA article.
Apple stupidity to skip the jack they care about dollars not customers or sound
Hope its isn't like Nokia 6700 Classic cos it causes nuisance plus problems with the same usb port. Charging problems and earphone problems. Please not on OnePlus.....
Much better placement on the top of the device. Looking good for the 5.

Sony can't make their flagship phones and the X/X Compact to be bezel less on sides because of side fingerprint reader. Now you'll put it to side as well, considering it even takes more space than a fingerprint reader?
I prefer to have the jack...hope there will be one... top or bottom, no preferences hère
Eske Rahn, 22 May 2017Some phoned have had the jack at the side back in time. This could be smart on a thin device, ... moreI'd be fine with a side jack too. But most phones today have rounded, sloping sides so it probably won't work (Xperias could pull it off, though).
