That being said it's still no excuse, all the other major components of a phone are advancing at a very rapid pace why not battery technology too, which is still stuck in the stone age lol
After two 'off topic' posts, feel compelled to add something relevant to the thread.
Of course they would give it away to users of their own branded phones.
Given most online services want to give a token 5Gb to the masses for nothing, the real money in cloud storage is when user X cannot be bothered to move to another free service with more space, and pays the piper for more storage space.
Threads on GSM a couple of years ago regarding win phones not playing flac (microsoft insisting such media files to be stored 'in the cloud' in order to play), quickly became discussions about different usage habits.
Some countries charge huge amounts for data access, and public free wifi isn't everywhere.
Cloud does have some advantages and is very useful to many.
Samsung should give away a lot more than 5Gb to flagship buying, paying customers, and 5Gb+ to anyone logging in on a device with their own branded firmware,.. or some such.
Whilst I was never a fan of cloud storage for my needs.. iOS file system restrictions can largely be mitigated by a cloud service.
Oh, and flac? - just install vlc, and drop all files, even using itunes on the desktop, straight into vlc folder. Vlc isn't the only one, btw ;-)

The coment below this (by me), in part, talks battery and is support for your comment.
Apples optimisations in software is in a large part due to their control over silicon design.
Moving the 'M' proccesor onboard the main processor as an example, means getting a supplementary processor that might process voice requests and physics movements/sensors etc made at a more modern fab process and permanently powered gives certain advantages.
Hence why I root for Exynos on Sammy chipset (mine is snapdragon), believing optimisations in software by Samsung will be for their own processor..
Stuff like playing musing off a low powered core. Chip design has been this way for a few years now, but without the hardware AND software working with each other we end up with phones running a day or two when doing very little.
-I get a week from my winphone, and generally the same from my Note with 'light usage'

If we look at battery tech, in general, we haven't had the same level of technology development as the rest of the phone.
It affects laptops and a lot of devices needing power.
If we consider flying drones, weight reduction and increases in operating time/power output would be very beneficial.
Not saying we have a twentieth century submarine engineering level problem to contend with.. but battery technology evolving is very important, to allow say, smartwatches that are thin and do not need charging daily, or maybe even weekly...
(I get nearly a week from my Sammy Fit, and was the reason I chose it over many competing products; including a Sony wearable that had a mic and e-ink display that should have been my 'go to' option, but a paltry battery forced me to consider other options..)
Just know that whilstever we rant and rave about how we want 'bigger (capacity) batteries', manufacturers are not dumb and will find a way to target this metric... for the spec sheet buyers.
Bigger sounding mAh are not all created equally; anyone familiar with rechargable AAs will know this. I would take a quality brand battery over an unknown with a bigger number mAh that sounds better on the label.
Researching a few years ago for a solar project, living at the time from a motor home and caravan, and having some deep cycle batteries I spent a few weeks researching/learning about battery tech.
Cell design in the battery affects many aspects of performance. Cells designed to sound great on the spec sheet might offer very reduced number of cycles (before losing significant output), or other ailments.
Fast charge capable batteries might have a differant design need (Likely needing more cells in parallel) and might sound 'smaller' by the numbers, eg 3000mAh vs 3500mAh; yet could easily prove to be vastly superior to the end user for real world usage.
Worse is that it might take us a year or so to realise....

Battery technology is lagging so far behind everything else in a phone that I don't expect it to catch up any time soon. Maybe in 10 years we'll have one that lasts us an entire week, wouldn't that be something?
AnonD-463876, 30 Jul 2016Hey I'm one of the biggest proponents of big batteries, the bigger the better regardless of it... moreall i see you say, is that you dont want a phone that lasts more than a day. s7 should have had 4000 battery, as the rumor said. but no, it got the 3000 like the note 5. and it isnt enough. i use my phone daily, play some games and cam a lot over messenger and viber = need to charge 2 times daily. on the 3000 battery of the s7. the galaxy alpha had a lot smaller battery, but lasted 3 times longer than any of the new sammys today. it was maybe 8 core 32 bit cpu and only 2gb ram, with a 4.7" 720p screen, but it lasted for 3 days on the same use i have today. sammy needs to think bigger and away from apple, so they can make phones that lasts for the consumers and not just for profit for them. that is the apple way, and sadly starting to be the sammy way.

But 3500 is no slouch either, as I said before a full day's use is more than adequate for 95% of smartphone users so I don't know what all the hubbub is about. And I hope the S8 comes with at least a 3600 mAh battery and the Edge variant with 4000+.

Zenodroid, 30 Jul 2016s7 edge has 3600, so yeah its bad.Really? Can we at least wait for it to be released before making hasty judgement calls? It got a 98h rating here I'm sure the Note 7 will either meet or exceed it. As long as you get a full day's of use then that's more than good enough.

We don't live in the stone age anymore, networks are always improving and getting faster (5G anyone?) and when was the last time you experienced a major natural disaster that wiped out all forms of communications hmm? Cloud storage makes sense in the world we live in whereas memory expansion is like analog television, old and antiquated.
I'm more impressed finding out that it has GG5. 5GB is too basic, at least Google gives you 15GB of free online storage.
5G of cloud storage and it's news.
cloud? that seems to be a familiar backup word xD
